Why You Need To Be Misunderstood In Your Marketing

I always want to be understood in what I put out into the world. It’s why I watered it down and tried to make it more palatable at every opportunity. Every point I made had a caveat to the extent that I barely even had a point anymore. Sure, people got what I had to say, but they didn’t deeply feel it, it wasn’t fully alive, it wasn’t life-altering in the same way my work is. It wasn’t until I claimed what I am really here to say, in a way that many people aren’t ready for, that my words started to land more deeply with those who were ready more than ever before.

It wasn’t just about speaking my truth; it was being ok with that being understood. Because for every “I don’t get it”, there was a “this is exactly what I’ve been looking for “ response. Want to claim that truth within your own marketing?

When Your Truth Feels “Too Different”

A few months ago, I found myself at lunch with a group of freelance friends, the kind of people who get it. Every time we meet, there’s this sigh of relief because we all understand the ups and downs of running a business.

But lately, something’s shifted. I noticed myself holding back, almost shutting down when talking about the direction my business is heading.
Why? Because I could feel that not everyone fully understood it.

It’s not that they weren’t supportive; they were. It’s just that my work has evolved into something that doesn’t fit neatly into the “normal” way of talking about marketing anymore. I’m no longer simply helping people create strategies. I’m helping them create marketing that mirrors their essence.

And that’s harder to package. It’s deeper. More psychological. More human. So yes, some people look at me with that confused-but-polite face. But when I’m speaking to the people who do get it, on calls, in my podcast, or in my writing, it flows so naturally. It lights me up.
Because that’s the thing about truth: it won’t land with everyone, but it will resonate deeply with the right ones.

Why It’s Okay to Be Misunderstood

As a marketer with a background in psychology, I’ve always taught that your audience needs to understand what you do. That’s still true. Your messaging should help people see themselves in your work.

But here’s the nuance I’ve come to understand:
Sometimes people don’t understand because they’re not supposed to.

Your marketing isn’t meant for everyone. It’s meant for the people who are ready to receive it.

And when we try to make everyone understand, we end up watering down our message so much that no one truly feels it. We dilute the magic that makes our work powerful.

I’ve seen this happen so many times, both in my clients and in myself. A client will come to me saying, “I’ve been told to make my marketing clearer,” or “I’ve been told to simplify the message so more people get it.”

But what often happens next is they start attracting clients who, while great on paper, don’t fully align with their energy, values, or approach. Because in making their message more “understandable,” they lost the essence that magnetises the right people.

The Trap of “Clarity” That Costs You Connection

Clarity is valuable, but only when it doesn’t come at the cost of your truth.

For example, one of my clients is deeply spiritual. She brings intuition and energy work into her coaching, but was scared to share that part of herself in her marketing. She worried it would turn people off.

And yes, it might. But the people it turns away are not the ones she’s meant to serve.

When she started expressing her spiritual side openly, she began attracting the clients who loved that about her. The ones who said, “I’ve been waiting for someone who speaks my language.”

That’s what happens when you stop trying to make your work understandable to everyone and instead make it undeniably true to you.

Your Niche Isn’t Something You Create, It’s Something You Express

Most people think finding a niche means narrowing yourself down.
But your niche doesn’t come from creating a client avatar or following a marketing formula.

Your niche arrives naturally when you start expressing your work in its truest form.

When you infuse your marketing with your beliefs, energy, values, and essence, the people who are meant for you will feel it instantly. And yes, others won’t. That’s the point. Because in order to attract the right people, you have to be misunderstood by the wrong ones.

The Energy Behind Your Marketing Matters

Your marketing has a frequency. It’s not just about words, it’s about energy.
When you water down your truth, your content loses its frequency.

And your audience can feel that.

When you express your real thoughts, even the ones you worry are “too bold”, your content vibrates differently. People feel it. They stop scrolling. They say, “This is exactly what I needed to hear.”

That’s when marketing becomes a mirror.
A mirror that reflects who you are and the kind of clients you’re meant to work with.

Being Misunderstood Is a Sign of Alignment

It’s uncomfortable, I know. There’s a part of all of us that just wants to belong to be liked, approved of, and understood.

But when you choose authenticity over approval, something powerful happens: your marketing becomes magnetic.

People who don’t get it might scroll past, but the ones who do?
They’ll stop, reach out, and say, “How do I work with you?”

That’s been my recent experience, the clients coming through are more aligned than ever. They’ve filled out applications saying how deeply they resonate with my approach. They see themselves in my words because I’ve stopped trying to make my words “fit” everyone.

Let Your Marketing Be a True Reflection of You

If you take one thing from this, let it be this:
Your marketing doesn’t need to be understood by everyone. It needs to be felt by the right ones.

The right clients will recognise themselves in your truth — not in your perfection.
And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do in business is to be misunderstood.

Because when you express your work in full truth — not the filtered, “marketable” version — you stop chasing clients and start attracting the ones who are truly ready for what you do.
