The other day I said to a friend on a walk by the water, “let’s just say your event is guaranteed to sell out. It’s already done. What would you want to share?”

This question arrived as a result of being so caught up in selling the spaces, that the creative energy that would channel the content to do so had dried up.

And this is something that happens to us all.

I actually think we are in some kind of collective rut with this at the moment.

Where everything has become so performative. So strategic. So structured.

That we don’t know how to create anymore.

We second guess the very thing that comes most naturally to us: to speak about our work.

And yet, when we remove the need for strategy (which as a nuance note, I’m not saying we do entirely), we find the words that naturally magnetise. That are the greatest expression of our work. That resonate with the people they are for.

So pull out your journal, sit with these questions and feel that creative spark turn to embers. 🐚

A common thread I’ve been witnessing (and living through) and I know it’s all supposed to be this way.

I held this narrative for some time.

I travelled a lot.
Had an array of jobs.
Changed business direction.
Evolved my opinions.

I started to think I couldn’t stick to things.

And don’t get me wrong, it required some discernment to know when I was running, avoiding and resisting.

But a lot of the time the shapeshifting comes from being the first of many to do what I do.

Choosing to take the path with no clear direction.

Looking for a new way that would truly align.

And that requires a bumpier journey with lots of twists and turns.

I’m starting to see what a gift that is.

Those that have seen the “standard” and decided they could never settle for that.

Many didn’t even want to be associated with their own industry.

Passionate about their work, but unsure where their unique way fit into the current moulds.

The answer was never meant to be found because it doesn’t.

Because of that, the standard ways of marketing were never going to work for them.

As a change maker myself, I knew I had to create new ways of marketing because the current methods were never doing to serve.

How does it feel like it’s too soon to be the end of another year, whilst also feeling like the start of 2024 was another lifetime ago?

I honestly feel like I’ve lived a thousand lives this year.

These last few days of the year are feeling like a bit of a rollercoaster.

On the one hand I feel really ready for a break.

On the other, I’m in flow and I don’t want to stop.

And usually it’s closely followed by people having fallen out of love so try their work, doubting themselves and feeling drained.

The truth is, everyone may benefit from your work, but then won’t if they

A) aren’t ready to receive it
B) don’t resonate with your unique approach

Your marketing is what determines you working with clients you love, who you can genuinely serve and have impact for.

And if your messaging isn’t speaking to that you’ll either to struggle to sign clients at all, or sign ones that aren’t aligned.

I was the only “freelance” person I knew.

Everyone around me seemed to have the kind of stability that I’d given up and I felt this urge to prove that I’d chosen the “right” path.

Mix that with an Italian family who have always believed if you aren’t working multi-jobs as often as you can, you’re “underworking”

And an industry that frequently uses terms like “addicted” and “24/7” in job roles.

It was easy to get caught up in the financial “success”.

And whilst sure, I’ve earned a lot from my business and I know the importance of earning money, the “real” rich I feel goes far beyond paper.

Getting to see the world, start my day slowly, spend more time with friends than ever, meet the most incredible people, chase the sun, rest when I feel like it and just genuinely wake up everyday excited to do that I do makes me feel all kinds of rich.

And we can acknowledge that.

Without shaming them into action as a result of it.

But the funny thing is what I do in 3 days now, I used to do in 1.

And whilst I’ve been really tapping into that part of me who was so capable and confident (because honestly I feel like I lost her somewhere along the way), I’m doing so with balance.

Yes my diary is fuller and I’m doing more of my work, but not at the expense of rest, time in nature and genuine fulfilment from what I do.

Believe it or not, if people aren’t ready to work with you, aren’t a match to the service or don’t vibe with your way of doing things, you’re doing something really right in your marketing!

A lot of the messaging we see on here is rooted in getting as many people in as possible.

But as someone who wants to make a genuine impact to peoples lives, that isn’t going to work for you.

You want the people who are truly transformed by your work, rave about it to their friends and want to come back again and again.

To have those kind of clients, you are going to have to repel a lot others in the process of finding them.

I’ll be honest, I think this has been my hardest year of freelancing

I’ve gone from living in a house of people working from home to living by myself.

I went from a full roster of clients to deciding to take a leap of faith in a new direction and start again.

I’ve had to draw on so much trust and work harder than ever to make things happen.

I’ve felt the most self-doubt and self-confidence I’ve ever experienced, bizarrely.

I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about giving up (and selling pics of my feet 🦶😂)

But days like this make it all worth it 🥹

I’ll be honest, I think this has been my hardest year of freelancing

I’ve gone from living in a house of people working from home to living by myself.

I went from a full roster of clients to deciding to take a leap of faith in a new direction and start again.

I’ve had to draw on so much trust and work harder than ever to make things happen.

I’ve felt the most self-doubt and self-confidence I’ve ever experienced, bizarrely.

I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about giving up (and selling pics of my feet 🦶😂)

But days like this make it all worth it 🥹

I don’t know a business owner that hasn’t launched something and had no sales from it.

Or, has been certain something would be a hit, only for it to be a total flop.

Or even to have had a content piece they have poured so much energy into be met with crickets.

Or, in the worst case, to have invested into something that turned out to be a colossal waste of time and money.

The longer I spend in marketing (and we are at a decade now, how did that happen?), the more I realise the real key to success is to just treat everything as one big experiment.

Offering flopped? if you based it on client research take a look at your messaging and try it again, if you didn’t, then do your research people!

Content not landing? have some conversations and see if what people are saying matches what you’re creating.

It’s all a playing field and the key to being better at the game is to see it as exactly that… and maybe even have fun with it (wild idea I know 🤠).

I don’t know a business owner that hasn’t launched something and had no sales from it.

Or, has been certain something would be a hit, only for it to be a total flop.

Or even to have had a content piece they have poured so much energy into be met with crickets.

Or, in the worst case, to have invested into something that turned out to be a colossal waste of time and money.

The longer I spend in marketing (and we are at a decade now, how did that happen?), the more I realise the real key to success is to just treat everything as one big experiment.

Offering flopped? if you based it on client research take a look at your messaging and try it again, if you didn’t, then do your research people!

Content not landing? have some conversations and see if what people are saying matches what you’re creating.

I was having a chat with a friend the other day about how posting on here can feel like speaking into the void and why that bothers us so much.

Is it because our view counts are low?
Engagement rate has dropped?
Responses are minimal?

I see a lot of people say “my content isn’t being seen” and I’m not sure that’s what matters.

What I really think we are saying here (because I’ve also said this too!) is that it isn’t feeling like our work is being recognised in the ways we want it to be.

You could go viral tomorrow and you’d be pretty “seen”, and whilst that may give you the dopamine spike, none of that would matter if you your work wasn’t fully understood, appreciated and valued.

So what are we really saying here?

Because you don’t need to reach a million views to be seen. You need a message that lands, connections that go beyond the surface and a recognition of the value that you provide.

I don’t see anyone.
Fear creeps in and imposter syndrome is loud.
I wonder if I’ll be able to pay my bills this month.
I don’t have anyone to pick up the slack.
My desire to stay in my comfort zone wins.
There’s no one to motivate me.

I find it hard.

But you know what’s saved me?

Community.

Being a part of the @un.common.folk , meeting the @happyfreelancers.co and heading to a @femalesmallbizgroup meet up have really pulled me out of a funk.

I feel on fire again and I’m left wondering why on Earth was I trying to do it all alone?

Last week I didn’t do what I had planned.

But what i did have me a far greater feeling of “success” than any of those things.

The more accurately you can reflect your service in your marketing the more likely you are to attract aligned clients.

The thing I’ve found with money is that it’s never enough.

Life continues to get more expensive, goals only expand and the upper limit just keeps stretching.

When I hit 10,15 and almost 20k months I just wanted more of it.

I didn’t stop and ask how present and connected I felt, how much capacity I had or whether things felt aligned.

The grip of “more” had me held right.

Now, things look a little different.

Do I want more money? Sure!

But do I also want more connection, space, impact and satisfaction?

Yes. And I’m grateful my business gives me that.

The thing I’ve found with money is that it’s never enough.

And the truth is, that’s exactly why I started the podcast in the first place.

I’ve been struggling to show the world my full expertise in today’s social media landscape.

It’s all about short-form content now, and I’m constantly
condensing my knowledge into snapshots that never feel like enough.

This podcast has been a space for me to go deeper, to really dive into the topics that light me up-and I want to share that.

So, am I giving away too much in a free podcast? Probably.

I used to wake up, down a coffee and run to the tube where I’d be crammed in like a sardine and hide in my kindle pretending I was somewhere else.

Then I’d power walk to the office on a mission just to sit at my desk early and eat breakfast over the news.

From there I wouldn’t stop, sometimes coming up for lunch an hour be fore the work day officially “ended” (I rarely ever left on time).

On the weekends I’d escape to my parents in the countryside I felt so frustrated by the pace of life. Why was everything so slow?

5 years on my life feels very different.

Slow is my preferred pace. I rarely rush. I’m steady and sustainable in my approach to things. I shut the laptop before 5 most days.

And it feels a whole lot sweeter
